Alessandro Torcini (AT) holds an A*Midex Chair of Excellence in Neuroscience at the University of Aix-Marseille, Marseille (France) since september 2015, where he is associated to the Institut de Neuroscience des Systémes, at Institut de Neurobiologie de la Meditérranée and Centre de Physique Théorique. AT is a an internationally renowned expert in complex systems dynamics with applications to multiscale brain networks. The main achievements obtained in the last years concern the characterization of the microscopic and macroscopic dynamics emerging in neural networks with different levels of connectivity, the characterization of population activity emerging spontaneously in networks presenting spike-timing dependent plasticity, as well as the identification of functional cliques in developing neural circuits able to control the collective firing of such systems. In the last 5 years he has been able to collect research funding with projects in computational neuroscience from EU, Italian Ministry of Research and of the Foreign Affairs, as well as from the French A*Midex foundation, for a total of 1.4 millions of euros. He has been appointed by the American Physical Society Outstanding Referee in 2008 and Member of the Editorial Board of Physical Review E in 2013. He has published more than 110 scientific papers on the dynamics of complex and bio-inspired systems, in particular 25 papers in the last 8 years have been devoted to computational neuroscience. His H-index is 26 and his works have been cited more than 1800 times (Web of Science 30/9/2015). AT has co-organized 17 workshops and conferences and within the last 10 years 6 were devoted to neuroscience.
